There and Back Again

We are still keeping up with our picture-a-day for-a-year goal.

We’ve gotten really into playing this game after dinner. It’s called Kingdom Builder, I got it for Doug for his birthday. I love finding a decent two-player game as they are hard to come by. Battleship got old fast.

Getting ready for a business trip the next day. My 4:45AM alarm was going to come awfully early so I made sure everything was ready the night before. There’s a lot of junk crammed into my purse like an inflatable neck pillow and pretzels. The necessities.

I flew to Kentucky with my boss and co-worker for the day for a meeting. We made it there and back again by dinner. (See more of the trip below)

If we haven’t taken our daily picture by 9PM then we go into a mild panic mode and usually default by taking a picture of the cats. Really, they’re the only things that are still cute after 9PM. I caught them hiding in my linen closet (yes on my freshly washed dark sheets that they unselfishly shared their fur with. Ugh, more laundry.). They were in there giving each other a bath. I think cat lovers and cat haters alike could’ve come together as one and forgotten their differences in this moment of extraordinary cuteness. They were even cleaning inside each others ears. I daresay world peace could have been achieved if more than just myself had witnessed that furry display of affection.

We are still working on our living room trim/moulding (I can tell you right now that we are never going to finish. Ever.) so we’ve left ultimate couch stuck together in the middle of the room. After date night on Friday we decided to watch a movie on the laptop on ultimate couch before going to bed. Every time we do this Felix thinks we’ve made a bed for him and he stretches his long body across the keyboard. Every time. We are usually too comfortable to get up and move him by that point so I just poke him with my toe until he gets up. If that doesn’t work we just watch the top half of the movie and deal with it until one of us gets up to move him.

I love Saturday morning breakfast. Yesterday we had crepes with fresh strawberries, lemons and bananas with a glass of fresh squeezed cara-cara orange juice. We were a little too ravenous to get a nice picture. Can you blame us?

The Professor is very proud of his new toy. (Side note: it’s after 9PM right now…so…cat.)

I mentioned my whirlwind trip above. We left Idaho Falls airport at 6:37AM and flew straight to little Danville, KY (just south of Lexington.) Danville is tiny, it’s like a little Rexburg. As a matter of fact, it’s where the 2012 vice-presidential debates were held. I was excited to go to Kentucky, even for a short time, because Doug lived there for a summer before we were married and I’ve never been there.

We had a meeting with a man over there named Mike. He picked us up at the airport and we went straight to lunch. He took us to Shakertown and we had the prettiest drive ever. Winding roads through rolling hills with grazing cattle and handmade stone fences on either side. Picturesque. Shakertown is the home of an old religious group that has since dwindled away. We had to make a quick stop at a garden club to see his mom get honored with something or other. The garden club was meeting in Shakertown so we peaked our heads in on their luncheon and all I saw was a sea of brightly colored dresses and giant floppy derby hats. I was grinning from ear to ear and asked my co-worker what year it was. They were so cute. I tried to sneak a picture when we walked out but it was blurry beyond recognition. We loved the stone fences that lined everything as far as we could see. They were done several hundred years ago by hand by Irish immigrants. No mortar was used. Pretty amazing how a lot of them still look pristine.

It’s always nice getting out of your own city, even if it’s just for a day. We had a lovely lunch peppered with southern hospitality and lots of “ma’am’s”, “y’all’s”, “recken’s” and the whole works. You can’t help but feel immediately welcome in a group of friendly, well mannered southerners. Got to love them. The rest of the afternoon was spent back at Mike’s office for our meeting. On our way back to his office, he let us know once we got there we could return any phone calls we needed to, use the restroom and freshen up if we liked. For some reason it piqued my interest that he used the phrase “freshen up” as I don’t hear that very often here, especially from a man. Well when I did step into the women’s restroom there was this little vanity in there equipped with everything a girl would need to “freshen up”. Gosh I love the south. My mom always made sure her and I had a vanity to get ready at growing up. Now I really miss it!

We headed back to Idaho that evening and made it home by dinner time. Although, I wasn’t too hungry what with all the popcorn we popped on the flight back to accompany our movie.  I was exhausted that night but it was such a fun day; it went by in a blur and seemed surreal the next morning.

Love it all, but especially “cat-in-the-box!”
